New Hole Shapes Allowed in Platform Tennis Paddles for 2024

Read our take on the new oval-shaped holes being utilized by various manufacturers instead of the traditional round holes.

First, a bit of background on the holes in platform tennis paddles...

Traditionally (and for as long as we can remember), platform tennis paddles have featured round holes across the paddle head to aid in maneuverability, snow management and ball spin. The uniform hole size was standard, and dictated by the American Platform Tennis Association. Until now!

More recently, the APTA has opened up the design of the paddles to allow varying hole dimensions and shapes. This, they say, is to spur innovation by manufacturers that have previously been handcuffed by the tightest of design specifications in the racquet sports industry. What an exciting and interesting time this should be as we see where the manufacturers take things!

Wilson was first out of the gate with their GRUUV technology, incorporating an area of narrow oval holes in the center of the paddle head. These edgier holes have been well received by Players who describe an increase in spin due to the way the ball's flocking catches and releases from the sharp, flat edge as they brush across the ball.

Others are following suit with larger, or longer holes. Models launching now for 2024 feature generously sized oval holes across the entire paddle head, again, with the idea of enhancing spin and feel.

Of course, not everyone is convinced that this is a welcome change. For instance, players seeking a head-heavy balance for more power, or just a more stable, solid feel overall may choose to stay with more traditional hole sizes rather than the more open design. We've even had customers comment about getting less paddle for more money :). Performance and time will tell.

Going forward, we expect to see some exciting innovations across the board. We expect this to keep things interesting, both for innovative design teams and Players alike. It is always nice to see designers push the limits using all of the technologies available to them today and to see what impact these changes bring to the game!
